My Advisor

Watch the video
I really hesitated about posting this, but I felt I needed to. After Ms. B's brave post a few months ago, I felt better about expressing myself this way. This vlog is a bit long (about 4 min.) because I didn't want to relive what I said and edit it, so it's here unedited.

It must be so difficult to lose a person in your life who you have worked with so closely and who is truly in a mentor capacity. I'm awfully sorry. I think you are right: the best way to remember him is to take the lessons he has taught you and use them both in your own life and to pass them on to others. The lesson you described--about using even the most negative moments as teaching tools--is a difficult one to master, and an excellent one to use to memorialize a cherished advisor.

I'm so glad you felt comfortable sharing this.

I like how when you do a "talk to the camera" video that you don't do a fade out at the end before the point in which you turn the camera off. It adds a touch of realism.

Losing people important to you is extremely hard. Thankfully, I haven't had to go through much of it in my life. When my dog died though, I barely spoke to anyone for three days. All other deaths of people I loved happened when I was too young to get incredibly depressed about death. I hope you feel better.

You are a brave person. Congrats on getting into the PhD program! I have worked with a couple alumni from University Hawaii, actually I live in a house that a Donna Stripling lived in for 14 years...I think she graduated with Jack Richards, however cant be too sure...
I really want to meet everyone in June however I doubt I am going to be able to make it...Perhaps when you are in Japan we can get together! I would really like to meet you!
Losing someone is always tough, I hope you get back on your feet asap!

Actually I couldn't see the video. I could hear the sound but that's all. Formatting problem?

Hi Dean,

It may be that your computer does not have the latest version of Quicktime. Go to http://www.quicktime.com and download Quicktime 7.0. It's free!

Hope that helps.

Aloha,
Becca

Thank you for sharing that. For not only sharing the lesson practicing it by making something good out of a difficult situation yourself.
Thank you.
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I pray you have continued to experience God's comfort.
